Frequently Asked Questions

Parents are encouraged to volunteer as board members, chaperones, and are always welcome to help with planning for concerts and special events. The Board of Directors for Durham Girls Choir has 7 roles, held by volunteers - either parents of current or past choristers, or members of the community.

What kind of time commitment is required for the board?

Volunteer board members meet (via Zoom) approximately 6 times per year to review, provide opinions, and vote on matters that affect the choir as an organization. Each board position also encompasses specific duties that vary based on the role. Some positions require 1 to 2 hours per week, while others may only require 1 to 2 hours per month.

What kinds of tasks do the board members work on?

Board members make decisions about events and performances, the focus of our programming, and the pricing of our choir season. They also help to maintain the day-to-day record keeping and operations of the choir, with each board position covering a unique set of duties. What kind of experience are you looking for in a board member?

No experience is necessary — just a willingness to share your time and opinions, to help guide our organization’s decisions.  Current board members will help to train you for a smooth transition as they exist the role.

My work schedule is unpredictable.
What happens if I can’t make it to a meeting?

That’s okay! We try to maintain a board of seven people, so even if one or two people can’t make it, there are still enough members to make decisions. Votes can be made via email or Google forms if people are very busy.

I’d love to help out with the board, but I don’t want to run the events. Would this be a problem?

That’s absolutely fine. Our volunteer board members make decisions about events, but aren’t required to staff them. We rely on many different kinds of volunteers throughout the season, so you are free to choose the level of involvement that works best for you.

Is there a financial commitment?

No. We ask only for your time and opinions.

Can parents of new choir members volunteer?

Yes, absolutely — anyone can become a volunteer board member. New energy and new opinions help us keep up with changing trends in our membership and our community as a whole.

Can I volunteer even if I don’t have a child in the choir?

Yes. While we make every effort to include as many parent voices as possible, we also welcome the passion and expertise of members of our greater Durham Region community.

How do I volunteer to join the board?

Fill out the Board Nomination form, including your name, email address and the date. This is needed for our official record-keeping. A current board member will then contact you to discuss the process and available open positions.
