Conductor, Performer and Musicologist - Kiera Galway
draws from a colourful and diverse range of experiences in a syncretic
approach to choral music making. In her positions as music director at
Toronto’s Danish Lutheran Church and founder/ conductor of community
chamber choir, Toronto Chamber Voices, Kiera strives to enable a creative
environment in which ensemble members are active co-creators of
the music.

Kiera was fortunate to grow up in St. John’s, Newfoundland, where a
supportive family and music community encouraged breadth of
musical participation. Kiera earned her Bachelor’s degree in Bassoon Performance and
Music History and Literature. Throughout her undergraduate years, she played with the
Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra and the Memorial University instrumental groups
and sang with Lady Cove Women’s Choir, Quintessential Vocal Ensemble and the Memorial
choirs. Under the mentorship of Dr. Douglas Dunsmore and Kellie Walsh, Kiera earned a
Masters’ degree in Choral Conducting at Memorial University in 2007. A desire to deepen
herunderstanding of the context of music making led Kiera to pursue graduate work in
musicology at the University of Toronto, receiving a Master of Arts in Spring 2009.
Her research interests include the articulation of identity through choral music, and
Kiera looks forward to exploring ways of bridging scholarship and practice.

Active in the Toronto community as a private teacher and chamber coach, Kiera teaches
voice lessons through the St. Simon’s Reaching Out Through Music Program. Her teaching
background includes sessional appointments and teaching assistantships at both Memorial
University and the University of Toronto.
